This course will focus on the psychosocial issues and stressors that individuals with cancer commonly face, and will include a comprehensive discussion of what it means to be living with cancer. The causes, signs and symptoms of each issue will be discussed, as well as appropriate treatment options. There will also be a discussion of what a social worker does and the role of social work in oncology.

The goal of this class is to teach massage therapists to identify and recognize these issues in their clients and to develop an awareness of the psychosocial, emotional, social, spiritual and financial impact that cancer has on individuals. Therapists will learn how to empathize with their clients and support them in a compassionate way as they begin to cope with these issues. Therapists will also learn about the importance of boundaries and how to sustain a healthy work-life balance. Burnout prevention will be discussed, and therapists can begin to explore their own burnout prevention plans.

Awareness of these issues will help therapists gain a better understanding of what clients with cancer are going through, and what is normal or to be expected, versus high levels of distress that may require further intervention from a mental health professional. Available resources and agencies or organizations for assistance and support will be provided.
