This course is designed to introduce and discuss the impact of pharmacology on massage treatment planning. It will focus on differences in cancer biology, drug classifications and associated side effects. The lecture will explore anti-cancer therapies and the potential adverse events associated with them. Case studies will be integrated throughout the lecture.

The hands-on portion of class will involve developing and enriching therapists’ intake skills regarding pharmacological considerations, including scheduling, treatment focus and duration, as well as protocol implications. Case studies from lecture will be used for hands-on practice.

Therapists will be provided with the opportunity to strategically plan effective, safe and therapeutic treatments.

Madden, MSN, FNP-BC, AOCNP®, APHN is a Family Nurse Practitioner in the melanoma/medical oncology group of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Clinical Cancer Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. Kathy serves as a sub-investigator for all melanoma research protocols at the Clinical Cancer Center. Her experience during her past 2 decades at NYU has included working primarily in adult medicine and oncology with a focus on skin cancers with a main concentration in melanoma. Kathy lectures nationally in her area of expertise and has multiple publications in her specialty. She has also served as clinical adjunct faculty for students working toward their bachelor and master of science in nursing. Kathy is also passionate about integrative healing arts and holds additional certifications in Clinical Homeopathy, Clinical Aromatherapy, Advance Practice
Oncology, IGM® Practitioner & Instructor, Clinical Meditation and Imagery. Kathy holds board certifications in Advanced Practice in Oncology and Holistic Nursing. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, ASCO, APSHO, ANA, American Holistic Nurses Association (current board member on the NYC chapter) as well as other professional organizations. Kathy continues to pursue learning experiences which synthesize eastern and western modalities, ultimately enhancing and benefiting both personal and professional endeavors.

Gary.Shelton_picGary Shelton, DNP, MSN, NP, ANP-BC, AOCNP is an adult oncology nurse practitioner and oncology clinical nurse specialist at the New York University (NYU) Medical Center, Perlmutter Cancer Center; an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center Institute. He is an advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner, by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation and is a board certified adult nurse practitioner, by the American Nursing Credentialing Center. Gary is a member of the American Cancer Society, Society of Urologic Nurses Associates, the Oncology Nursing Society, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Asociation and the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care, for whom he has spoken locally, nationally and internationally. He was named Nurse of the Year by Columbia-Presbyterian Comprehensive Cancer Center, and more recently the 2010 Nursing Excellence Award at the NYU Langone Medical Center. He has been a lecturer for many seminars and presentations regarding nursing topics such as men’s cancers, primary prevention, and early detection; smoking cessation; and anorexia, weight loss, and cachexia in oncology, among others. He has authored or coauthored numerous abstracts, journal articles and book chapters. He earned a DNP degree from Chamberlain College of Nursing and a Master of Science degree in nursing (oncology clinical nurse specialist program) from Columbia University, School of Nursing in New York, where he subsequently completed the adult registered nurse practitioner post-master’s program. He is currently Coordinator of the NYU Outpatient Supportive Oncology Services Department.
