The purpose of this course outlines the larger field of study of schools of philosophy, history, culture and styles of Asian bodywork including basic acupressure, tui na (gentle style), an mo, shiatsu, Japanese styles, Thai massage, naturalistic school, ayurvedic and chakra systems. Discussions provide an overview of “What is Qi?”, yin and yang, breath, movement, meridian theory of 12 channels and 8 extraordinary channels and auxiliary pathways. Eight parameters, organ theory and five element theory, classifications of points, basics of point location, body reading and Hara diagnosis are introduced. Practical application of introduction to tui na and acupressure are explored with energetic balancing as the goal of the bodywork session. The exploration of movement through qi gong breathing is experienced.

McIlvaine photo copyJoy A. McIlvaine, MS, RN, ANP-BC, LAc is an educator for nurses and therapists and she has practiced massage therapy for over 20 years. She currently works as a Nurse Education Manager at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York City. She has a varied history of studies including massage therapy, therapeutic yoga, meditation, Jin Shin Jyutsu and Asian Medicine including acupressure, acupuncture and herbal therapy. She received her Masters of Oriental Medicine from the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, CA and had a private practice in Mill Valley, CA. With a desire towards the integrative vision of medicine, Joy studied nursing and received an Adult Nurse Practitioner degree from Columbia University in New York City. Her training included a specialty in Herbs, Nutraceuticals and Supplements and a second specialty in Palliative and End-of-Life Care. She also completed a post-graduate fellowship in Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel’s Center for Health and Healing. For CATA’s Oncology Massage Training and Certification curriculum, she teaches courses in Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help; Palliative and End-of-Life Care; Ethics, Professionalism & Boundaries; and Asian Bodywork & Energetics.

MichaelAlicia-featuredMichael Alicia, LMT is the Founder and Director of CATA, NYC. He has been a licensed massage therapist since 1992 with a thriving practice in Manhattan. Referrals come from long-time satisfied clients, New York’s Broadway and Ballet communities, as well as doctors and chiropractors who prescribe massage for acute injury, chronic pain, stress reduction and performance enhancement. His therapeutic sessions are crafted with an eye toward resolving chronic problems using a variety of techniques, including various forms of massage like Swedish, deep tissue, medical massage, shiatsu and Thai massage, while also including rehabilitative exercises in the form of stretching and strengthening exercises.

Michael has been a teacher of Swedish massage, shiatsu and Thai massage at the venerable Swedish Institute since 1994. He is also a visiting faculty member at the Therapeutic Massage Training Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He is the author of The Massage Therapist’s Handbook and The Stretching Process DVD and Workshop.
