This workshop covers assessment of the shoulder, elbow and wrist as it applies to formulating effective treatment goals for a variety of disorders in the region, such as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Adhesive Capsulitis/”frozen shoulder”, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis, “Blackberry thumb”, Shoulder tendinosis, etc. Participants will be shown how to release clavipectoral, deltopectoral, platysmal, sternal, cubital, flexor & extensor superficial fascias before deeper structures are addressed. Scapular mobilization will be shown with specific releases to all muscles involved with upper extremity dysfunction. Clavicle mobilization and abdominal head of pec major release round out the shoulder approaches. Treatment of the elbow and wrist with focus on decompressing the radius & ulna from the humerus, decompressing the Carpal Tunnel, as well as mobilizing the carpals, can improve & prevent many of the above disorders.

There will be a half-hour lunch break, so students may want to bring a bagged lunch and eat in the student lounge.

Required Materials: 2 sheets (1 fitted, 1 top sheet), 1 towel, 1 pillowcase, pen and paper, sports bra and shorts. Also bring Atlas of Human Anatomy by Netter or an equivalent anatomy textbook or application. $30 fee payable to instructor for workshop DVD (optional).

Carrie has been in the fitness & nutrition industry as a certified professional since 1990, a Registered Massage Therapist in Canada since 2000, and a licensed massage therapist in the U.S. since 2005. Following completion of a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of British Columbia, Carrie attended the prestigious West Coast College of Massage Therapy in Vancouver to complete a 3500 hour Massage Therapy program. She has been teaching at the Swedish Institute since January 2001, where her topics of expertise include; Myofascial Release, Anatomy & Physiology,
Pathology, Neurology, Palpation, & Clinical Strategies.

Carrie works with patients in Manhattan & New Jersey, and currently practices Myofascial Release, Core Stability based Personal Training & stretching, and Nutrition Counseling. She has a core stability total body conditioning DVD, as well as all ten level I Myofascial release classes (available in hard copy or downloadable format for your iPads, smart phones etc).
