This 12-hour class will be divided into three four-hour sessions covering:
- Assessment Tools
- Defining Conditions
- Treatment Protocols
- Follow-up and Self-Care
- Case Studies
Students will be taught assessment techniques for each condition using the 8 guiding principles, 5-Element Correspondence, and the 4 Shin.
Different back conditions will be identified and discussed including: Low Back Strain, Herniated Disc, Kidney Deficiency, Spleen Deficiency, and Trauma.
Protocols will be demonstrated and practiced for each condition using:
- Notification & Dispersal techniques
- Point therapy
- Massage techniques
- Tui Na- rubbing tapping, pressing
- Heat therapy (moxibustion)
- Cupping therapy
- Protocols and cautions
- Guasha therapy
- Kenbiki & Jostling
- Oils and Liniments
Standard informed consent and discussion of the risks and contraindications will be outlined for each condition.
Students will practice these techniques on each other and then role-play with a classmate to mimic the client-practitioner dynamic.
The workshop will conclude with self-care techniques like Qi Gong, specific to Back Conditions (Qi Gong DVD available for practice).
Sensei Reggie is a senior instructor at the Swedish Institute. He has been teaching Shiatsu, Tai Chi and related subjects for over 25 years. He is also an Asian Healing Arts and Herbal Consultant. He is a former member of the New York State board of massage and has been an American Massage Therapy Association professional member for 30 years.
